SCENE FOUR
In the blackout for the change of scenes, we hear metallic noises, then the opening of a metal door, then it slams. Voices murmur in a large room with a strong echo - we cannot hear exactly what is said. Then we hear a voice scream and as we do, the lights come on.
Sunni lies on a cot, then awakens.
SUNNI
Hello. Hello. Is someone out there? Can someone please answer me? Where am I? Hello - you made a mistake. Can you hear me? Please, you made a mistake. My name is Sunni Paine. Maybe you're looking for a guy named S-o-n-n-y Paine, but that's not my real name. My real name is Sylvia. Hello. Please - can you hear me? This all a mistake. Is somebody out there?
(She starts to bang on the door with greater force)
SUNNI (CONT'D)
Hello. There's been a mistake. Can you hear me? A mistake. My fiancé is a lawyer. Do you understand? He's a lawyer. I have to go to the bathroom. Can you hear me - I have to go? Please. Would you answer me? Please.
(Suddenly, there is a metallic voice which is too loud for the space.)
VOICE
Ms. Paine, you've been taken into custody. We are processing you.
SUNNI
(Spinning around looking to try and see where the voice is coming from.)
HELLO - HEY! THERE'S BEEN A MISTAKE -
VOICE
We need you to sit on the cot and look toward the light that's on the opposite wall.
SUNNI
What? Look, there's been a mistake.
VOICE
Sit on the cot and look up at the light on the opposite wall.
SUNNI
Right - look, are you the police?
VOICE
Ms. Paine, do as we ask. Sit on the cot and look up at the light on the opposite wall.
SUNNI
I'm not doing anything until I talk to a lawyer.
VOICE
Sit on the cot and look at the light on the opposite wall. Please.
Sunni sits down.
SUNNI
(She rises)
Please, I have to go to the bathroom first.
VOICE
After. Now, please sit on the cot and look at the opposite wall.
(Sunni moves to the cot and sits on it. Her head is down. As she looks up, her hair falls across her face.)
Move your hair off of your face.
SUNNI
(STANDING)
MAYBE YOU WEREN'T LISTENING. MY NAME IS REALLY SYLVIA PAINE - I ONLY USE -
VOICE
Sit down. Sit down and look at the light on the opposite wall. And move the hair from your face. Please.
(Sunni sits down again and moves her hair back. There is a clicking sound. Then, silence. Sunni sits there for a minute.)
SUNNI
Okay, can I use the bathroom now - please?
VOICE
That's what the bucket's for.
SUNNI
What? Are you kidding?
(Suddenly, all the lights go out.)
What? What's going on? Turn the lights back on. I can't see anything. What's going on? Turn on the light right now - now! You hear me - What's going on what!
We hear Sunni groping in her cell. She bangs into the bed and curses. Finally, we hear the sound of water in the bucket. There is a moments pause until we finally hear her kick the bucket and scream very loudly, then silence.
